Kingston University Robotics Laboratory | Shortlisted for Education Estates Refurbishment of the Year
We are pleased to announce that the Robotics and AI Laboratory at Kingston University’s Roehampton Vale campus has been shortlisted for the Refurbishment of the Year category at the 2026 Education Estates® Awards.
Delivered in partnership with Kingston University London, the project transformed a 435 sqm former aerospace workshop into a purpose-designed robotics and artificial intelligence learning facility. The design introduces a clear spatial strategy centred on zoned learning environments, bringing together flexible teaching areas, robotic testing zones, computer labs, and specialist equipment spaces within a single, open volume. A new mezzanine level was introduced within the existing double-height space, creating additional teaching and study areas while maximising the potential of the building fabric already in place.
Flexibility is central to the design. Subliminal zoning techniques, strategic use of wall and floor finishes, and high-level service drops for power and compressed air support a range of furniture arrangements and teaching methods without the need for permanent divisions. The result is a space that can respond to evolving pedagogical needs and emerging technologies while maintaining operational efficiency and safety.
Sustainability was a guiding principle throughout. By working with the existing structure rather than building new, the scheme achieves an embodied carbon figure of 258 kgCO₂e/m², substantially below typical benchmarks and aligned with RIBA 2030 targets. Thermal upgrades to the walls and roof, improved glazing, and high-efficiency building services reduce operational energy consumption from 193 kWh/m²/year to 135 kWh/m²/year, directly supporting Kingston University’s net-zero ambitions.
The project was shaped through close collaboration with university stakeholders at every stage. Working alongside Kingston University’s Estates Manager, Technical Officer, and Project Manager, as well as academic users, the design team developed a facility that is technically robust, directly responsive to user needs, and positioned to support the university’s continued growth in robotics and AI education.
The Education Estates Awards celebrate excellence in the built environment across the UK education sector. Winners will be announced at the annual gala dinner later in 2026.
