Durham University, Wolfson Research Institute
The facility allows Durham University to advance its pioneering medical research
Occupying a prime riverside location, the design for the medical research laboratories at Durham University takes full advantage of both its picturesque setting and its historical context.
The building offers an inspiring environment to further interdisciplinary research in to subjects including life sciences, health and well-being. The BREEAM rated scheme boasts a number of new facilities including laboratories, seminar rooms, teaching spaces, offices, cafés and collaborative breakout areas.
Three departmental functions are represented within the building, each housed within a distinctive, stand-alone block. Service towers, designed to reflect the industrial heritage of the adjacent Teesside river, create a rhythm and order to the development.
Vibrantly coloured, double height spaces and sensitively landscaped south-facing courtyards connect the blocks creating focussed areas of interest and movement.
