Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport, New Terminal
The design offers an iconic gateway to one of North East Asia’s fastest growing commercial hubs
The site for the new terminal at Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport is located on a purpose-built, man-made island reclaimed from the sea.
Pascall+Watson’s competition entry, produced as part of a consortium, creates a dramatic statement with its bold design establishing a unique and instantly recognisable landmark.
The envelope of the building is conceived as a series of interwoven structural shells creating a free-flowing, seamless aesthetic. The design evokes an avian form, echoing the surrounding waves and hills in its distinctive arrangement. A series of apertures in the roof allows natural light to penetrate the buildings’ interiors creating a bright, fluid and captivating volume.
Designed to accommodate a passenger throughput of up to 38 million passengers per year, the terminal can be progressively expanded in the future to keep ahead of the ever-increasing demand.
