Lucknow, India – C.C.S International Airport, passenger terminal concept delivered by Pascall+Watson Architects has been unveiled by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
Pascall+Watson Led Design for New Terminal at Lucknow Airport
London-based architectural firm, Pascall+Watson, led the conceptualisation and vision for the new integrated passenger terminal at Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow, India. Terminal 3, an ambitious project designed to accommodate projected passenger traffic growth over the next 20 years, promised world-class facilities to enhance the passenger journey.
In collaboration with Egis, Pascall+Watson's scope encompassed architectural design, terminal planning, passenger modelling, and design coordination for the expansive 120,000m² terminal facility. The design featured a modular integrated terminal building spanning 100,000m², with 15,000m² allocated for retail spaces and an additional 20,000m² in the basement area. Notable highlights included advanced baggage handling systems, laser scanners, duty-free shops, premium lounges, and a comprehensive food and beverage offering.
In addition to the terminal, the project included a multi-level car park capable of accommodating 1,500 vehicles, buses, and VIP transport. This was complemented by a four-lane vehicular road, featuring a canopy over two lanes, connecting the terminal to the city's main approach road.
Pascall+Watson's design philosophy integrated the region's unique climatic conditions and cultural heritage, utilising local materials and maximizing natural light to create a distinct sense of place for travellers. Sustainability was at the core of the design, with features such as solar PV arrays and rainwater harvesting systems integrated to minimise environmental impact. The firm also prioritised sustainable construction techniques to further reduce the ecological footprint during the project's implementation.
"Drawing on inspiration from the strong traditional Lucknow architecture and merging this with the complexity of an international airport, we were proud to develop the concept for the new terminal. A simple yet expressive design approach that showcases vast external shaded areas and voluminous internal spaces defined by bold lines and curves." – Nitesh Naidoo, Director, Pascall+Watsons
