Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport, Masterplan & New Terminal
The strategic masterplan and terminal design offer a distinctive focal point for China’s Silk Road Economic Belt
Ürümqi is the regional capital of the remote north-western Xinjiang province and a leading centre for commerce and culture. The Chinese government determined that a substantial investment was required into the region’s airport infrastructure to position Xinjiang as a key gateway between China and Central Asia.
Pascall+Watson were invited to participate in an international competition to design the new Terminal 4 at Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport. A unified masterplan and concept design were created in the form of a single terminal solution, futureproofed for expansion to accommodate an ultimate capacity of 45 million passengers per year.
Inspiration for the design came from the local landscape referencing the surrounding hills, valleys and plains. The materials palette developed for the building’s interior reflects the textures and patterns of traditional silk fabrics, a major trading component of the region.
The striking architectural form combined with an efficient use of space creates a symbolic aviation hub for China’s largest province.
