Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport, New Terminal
The expressive roof form reflects the airport’s local context creating an evocative gateway to Lyon
Located in Eastern France, the new terminal at Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport provides much needed capacity for both traditional and low-cost carriers.
Our scheme takes its inspiration from the nearby mountains; the jagged formation of the roof enables natural light to penetrate deep into the heart of the building washing the generous passenger dwell areas beneath.
Protection of clear sight lines from the control tower to the aircraft presented an interesting challenge during the evolution of the design. Expansive glazed facades create the building’s envelope, allowing passengers to enjoy clear views across to the city and to the airfield.
The new terminal fluently connects with the airport’s existing facilities, offering passengers an intuitive experience where retail outlets, restaurants and art exhibitions make reference to Lyon’s place as a leading European City of Culture.
