We are pleased to announce our 2nd placed entry into the Network Rail's 'Re-Imagining Railway Stations - Connecting Communities' RIBA international design competition, in collaboration with Gillespies (Landscape), Cundall (Engineering & Sustainability), LAPD (Lighting Design) & Fusion (Cost & PM).
The competition, which attracted more than 200 entries from competitors based in 34 countries, was conducted in two stages. The initial stage saw us shortlisted as 1 of 5 successful candidates to progress the concept design through to the second stage of the competition, which required design application and development at two site-specific locations.
Our entry aimed to explore and establish a consistent design language that provided a 21st-century vision that could be widely adopted across the 2000+ small to medium stations nationwide.
Integral to our thought process was capturing local identity to balance with a national vision, combined with initiatives to successfully engage with each community. Each station would become a 'Community Hub' realising opportunities in each location they serve, whether rural, suburban or urban. Our approach aimed to shift the purely functional nature of stations into a more positive emotive experience that all passengers and users can enjoy.
Sustainability is front and centre to our design response and is realised in all aspects of design, delivery and use, to achieve a Net-Zero Carbon response.
