DLR, South Quay Station, New StationDocklands Light Railway Ltd

A new stand-alone facility, South Quay DLR station, was developed to accommodate a new generation of three car trains.

The primary design objective was to create a simple, rational solution enabling passengers to move effortlessly through the building. Lightweight platform canopies, full height glazed screens and integrated information systems combine to provide a language of elegance and simplicity. Lifts at either end of the station rise from the public concourse below the raised tracks, acting as bookends to the platforms. Stairs and escalators were constructed around inclined columns giving support to the back of the platform structure and defining the public ground floor concourse space where tickets can be purchased and passenger information sought. Back of platform screens were constructed in simple repetitive aluminium support structures comprising clear and translucent glass panelling. The architecturally expressive forms of the building provide it with its own identity, announcing its presence within its urban context.

Value: £200m (incl 23 other DLR stations)
