London Bridge Station, New Concourse BuildingRenzo Piano Building Workshop

As Europe’s tallest building, The Shard has dramatically changed London’s skyline. Pascall+Watson worked with its architects, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, to develop detailed designs for a new concourse and piazza for London Bridge Station, situated at the base of the building.

The approach to the station is now via a generous, tree-lined piazza that accommodates the London Bridge bus station, passenger set-down areas and taxi zones. A highly transparent structure situated on the piazza visually connects The Shard and the station, neatly resolving the interface between them by echoing the language of the skyscraper.

Built on the original London Bridge Station arches, the new passenger concourse is an open and elegant space featuring one of Europe’s longest ticket entry barriers, a configuration that enables the fluid movement of vastly increased numbers of passengers.

The completion of the piazza and concourse marked a significant milestone in the development of the London Bridge Quarter.
