University College London, Roberts Building Engineering FacultyUniversity College London

The re-modelling and extension to the Roberts Building at University College London provides new postgraduate research facilities, academic accommodation, seminar rooms and a multi-purpose exhibition space. The exhibition area offers a public face to the campus and communicates the work of the faculty to a much broader audience.

The primary architectural expression rests with the terracotta louvres that offer both shading and screening to the fully glazed curtain walling system along the front facade. Terracotta cladding wraps either side of the building to unify the aesthetic. The design and selection of materials convey a new, modern and innovative presence at street level, confidently portraying the great academic aspirations of the faculty. The building demonstrates commendable sustainability credentials having achieved a BREEAM 'Very Good' rating.
