Queen Mary University of London Engineering Facility (Project 1), Queen Mary University of London

This ‘transformational project’ modernises and upgrades existing facilities for the university’s School of Material Sciences. The existing 5-storey 1960s building was no longer fit for purpose and did not conform to the university’s aspiration to provide a high quality learning and research environment.

Pascall+Watson worked as contractor’s architect, collaborating throughout with the estates team and key stakeholders, to successfully deliver the project within the required timeframe. The engineering block was remodelled to provide state-of-the-art teaching and research spaces, with adjacent facilities remaining fully operational throughout construction.

Our innovative designs for the remodelled block act as a benchmark for future development phases and provide quality learning environments with a contemporary feel which visually link with adjacent facilities. The modern look, permeating throughout all of the spaces, further underlines the ethos of openness and visibility which university wished to promote, whilst increasing the potential for university research opportunities.
