London School of Economics, Library RefurbishmentLondon School of Economics

The steady growth of students attending the London School of Economics exceeded predictions when the Lionel Robbins building was redeveloped to create the library.

The original scheme evolved around a spectacular atrium space with a spiral stepped ramp topped by a roof light oculus as the focal point. Although the school recognised this as a fundamental design feature, the necessity to expand facilities on a constrained urban site meant they faced infilling the atrium with additional ‘decks’. Pascall+Watson challenged this preconception and addressed the potential to replan the existing floor plates to achieve greater efficiencies.

Our proposals provided minimal impact on the atrium and the project has now been completed on site retaining the iconic spiral stair and atrium.
