Kingston University, Knights Park Campus Learning Resource CentreKingston University
The refurbishment and extension of Kingston University’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture was the first significant phase of Pascall+Watson’s masterplan for the university’s Knights Park Campus.
The addition of an elegant glazed roof to the external quadrangle of the faculty’s 1930s building created a bright and airy atrium that is now home to the Learning Resources Centre (LRC). This accommodates a new helpdesk, print shop and open plan study spaces. Remodelling the studio, office and administrative areas gave the university the flexibility required for contemporary learning and established visual connections with the atrium. The LRC’s former home was meanwhile re-dedicated to studio space.
The completed scheme received exemplary feedback from students and staff alike, for the quality of the architecture and its in-use operational effectiveness.
Environmental features such as the enclosure of external walls within the new atrium, mixed mode ventilation, rooftop photovoltaic panels, solar thermal collectors and a rainwater harvesting system provide a more sustainable future for the building.Value: £3.5m
