University of Sussex, East Slope Student AccommodationUniversity of Sussex

Pascall+Watson won the competition to provide accommodation for 1,000 students on two separate sites, East Slope and Northfield, adjoining the university campus near Lewes in Sussex. A sustainable approach to the design and construction informed both projects.

The East Slope site has more of an urban setting nearer the heart of the campus. In response to the masterplan and the existing context of buildings designed by Sir Basil Spence, the accommodation for 600 students was arranged in linear blocks along the contours of this steeply sloping site. This approach optimised access, orientation and the phased construction approach favoured by the client. Level access to all blocks is possible from points along a new access road rising up the hill along the south-west boundary.
