Durham University, Wolfson Research InstituteDurham University

Occupying a prime riverside site, the design for the research laboratories at Durham University takes full advantage of both its location and context. The building provides a myriad of new facilities including laboratories, seminar rooms, teaching areas and offices.

The plan was developed as three distinct blocks to align with the departmental split of the university. A double height circulation space and landscaped south-facing courtyards between the blocks deliver a coherent overall solution, creating a sense of community and place.

A unique aspect of the design were the three dedicated services towers facing the river, like three industrial loading docks, forming a dramatic rhythm on the Teeside skyline.
