Lyon Airport, New TerminalVinci GTM, France

Pascall+Watson, as part of a consortium led by Vinci GTM Construction, France, were invited by Aeroports de Lyon to participate in the design and build competition for a new terminal at Lyon airport. The development of Terminals 1 and 3, replacing a temporary terminal structure as part of a €150m investment programme to create much needed capacity for both traditional and low-cost carriers.

The 65,000m² terminal and forecourt, connecting with existing terminals, piers and satellite, forms a sustainable landmark build and provides an iconic, open and inviting gateway to Lyon.

Developed on a site constrained in height by sight line restrictions, the architectural proposal makes reference to the local context of the nearby mountains, enabling the roof to gently open up in facets to flood the generous passenger dwelling spaces below with natural light.

Glazed facades in all directions allow passengers to enjoy views to the city and the aircraft.

The proposal aims at providing passengers with an enjoyable yet simple and intuitive journey through the terminal, where retail outlets, restaurants and artwork exhibitions make reference to Lyon as a City of Culture and, of course, as the unofficial Gourmet Capital of France.
