St Pancras Station Opens

A consortium of Costain, O'Rourke Civil Engineering and Emcor Drake & Scull, working with Pascall+Watson Architects, has completed the delivery of the £380 million St Pancras Station in London for Union Railways (North), confirming its position as a world class transport hub. The project has enabled the integration of Thameslink and Channel Tunnel Rail Link train lines, and allows Eurostar to arrive under complete cover. The station's Grade I listed building has been refurbished, and a 3,000 sq m concourse, three times the size of the original one, has been created. The concept design for the extension was undertaken by Arup and Foster & Partners. Pascall+Watson was responsible for the detailed design and had 20 members of staff on site during construction to monitor progress. While respecting Foster & Partners concept design, Pascall + Watson developed a solution for the interior spaces. By opening up wells in the original floor, the team enabled natural light to reach the basement, making the space brighter and more comfortable for passengers. The practice also developed an innovative solution for the Grade I listed Barlow shed roof, which was originally intended to be clad in cast iron, by The ridge and Furrow design was replicated the material with aluminium.
