Pascall+Watson Collaborate with Ateliers Jean Nouvel to Bring Louvre Abu Dhabi to LifeOctober 2017
Pascall+Watson have collaborated with Pritzker Prize winning French architect Jean Nouvel, to create the striking Louvre Abu Dhabi, which will open to the public on Saturday 11 November.
As Executive Architects since 2009, our teams in Abu Dhabi and London have developed the detailed design, specifications for construction and the production of an intricate Revit 3D model used as a tool by the wider design and engineering teams.
Louvre Abu Dhabi is one of a series of galleries and museums on Saadiyat Island and will house great artworks from around the world, with a universal focus on shared human stories across civilisations and cultures.
The design consists of a series of connected gallery spaces totalling 8,000m², surrounded by seawater and largely covered by a vast 180m diameter domed roof, supported on just four piers.
The dome which is inspired by the cupola, a distinctive feature in Arabic architecture, has seemingly random geometric openings that cast fragmented light into the circulation spaces below, suggestive of dappled light filtering through a traditional interlaced palm leaf roof.
